What is The Conclusion About?

Samapti or The Conclusion – as it is know in English – is an excellent work, and undoubtedly one of Tagore’s finest short stories. It presents a beautiful and touching view of love, adulthood, and societal expectations. It is about Apurba, a highly educated young man, returning from his studies in Calcutta to his home in a rural village after finishing college exams. Apurba’s mother has arranged for him to marry a young woman he has been brought up to expect to be gentle, conventional, and dutiful.

He however finds himself totally smitten with a wild, tomboyish young woman in his village named Mrinmayi who spends her days with all the boys playing and running around in the woods and climbing trees, refusing to become the compliant girl society expects.

Apurba, infatuated, convinces his mother that he must marry Mrinmayi. But, that is just the beginning of their story. Mrinmayi has absolutely no preparation for the roles that she is suddenly called upon to fulfill within a wife’s duties and life within Apurba’s family compound. Not even on the radar screen in her young and untamed mind.

The rest of the story tells her coming of age as she adjusts from a child-like existence to womanhood as Apurba, with the intention of further studies, goes back to Calcutta heartbroken with her complete rejection of him. The experience teaches Mrinmayi to love him. This poignant story was subsequently made into a beautiful film by Indian cinematic genius Satyajit Ray in a 1961 anthology entitled Teen Kanya. I know this for sure because I found the external link for Satyajit Ray on Britannica which has many resources about his influential contributions .
