What is Master Mashai About?

Master Mashai is a sad and powerful short story written by the famous Rabindranath Tagore. The story happens in Calcutta, which is now called Kolkata, a time ago when the British were in charge. It is about a man named Haralal who is very poor but has strong beliefs. He wants to take care of his mother so he gets a job as a teacher or “Master Mashai” for a rich kid named Venugopal.

Venugopals family is very wealthy. They do not treat Haralal nicely.. Haralal really cares about Venugopal and wants to teach him good things. The story shows how different the lives of rich people are. It also shows how being rich can sometimes make people bad. Haralal loves Venugopal like a son but Venugopals family does not respect him.

As time goes on Venugopal starts to change and becomes spoiled. To understand what life was like then for rich and poor people in Calcutta you have to think about how different things were.

Something sad happens when Haralals employer gives him a lot of money to take care of.. Then some terrible things happen and Haralal gets into big trouble. He is betrayed by Venugopal and his life is ruined. This is very sad because Haralal loved Venugopal like a son. The end of the story is very tragic. It makes you think about how bad people can be, to each other. Master Mashai is a story that makes you feel sad and think about the things that can happen when people are cruel.
