What is Chitra About?

Chitra (Chitra: A One Act Play), a one act lyrical play, written by the poet-philosopher Rabindranath Tagore, was published in English in the year 1913. This play is based on the Mahabharatha epic, a collection of stories from ancient India. It tells the story of Chitrangada (Chitra), the beautiful warrior princess of Manipur. It was revealed to the king of Manipur in a boon that his line would consist only of princes and therefore Chitrangada was brought up as the prince and was educated in archery, military skills and the responsibilities of kingship.

She fell in love with the Pandava hero, Arjuna, who was living in the woods under a Vow of Chastity. He dismissed her as too masculine and did not reciprocate her feelings. The lovelorn princess beseeched God of Love, Madana, and the god of spring and youth, Vasanta, to grant her unparalleled bodily beauty for a single year, during which she captivates the heart of Arjuna, only to confront a significant internal conflict as the year winds to its end. As Arjuna starts falling under the spell of her borrowed beauty, Chitrangada understands that he is loving an illusion not a strong and mighty woman. The play reaches a crescendo, the borrowed beauty disappears, and she declares herself with her true beauty as a king, a warrior, the saviour of her land and dares Arjuna to fall for real her.
