What is Kacha and Devayani (Vidaya-Abhisap) About?
Kacha and Devayani, which is known in its original Bengali as Vidaya-Abhisap (The Farewell Curse), is a very good verse play taken from an interesting part of the big Indian epic, the Mahabharata. This story focuses on a really sad conflict, between strict duty and very strong love. Kacha, who is a young messenger for the Devas (that means gods), gets sent to the land of the Asuras (which are demons) so he can study under their important guru, Shukracharya. His one job is to learn the Sanjivani Vidya—this is the secret method for bringing de͏ad people back to life.
While he spent many years studying really hard, Shukracharya’s daughter, Devayani, she was beautiful and quite independent, she ended up falling deeply in love with Kacha. When Kacha eventually learns this secret knowledge, he then gets ready to go back to the celestial place to do what the gods a͏sked him to do. Just before he is about to leave, Devayani meets him, and she tells him how much she loves him, and she demands he stay there to marry her.
Kacha, however, does not accept her advances. He explains that his main duty is to his people. And, he considers Devayani his sister, this is because he was reborn from her father’s stomach, you see, during a mystical trial. Devayani, heartbroken, really furious, and also deeply humiliated by what she sees as his cold and calculating asceticism, puts a terrible curse on him. This curse means the great life-giving knowledge he got, that cost her heart, will never work when he t͏ries to use it for himself.
To better understand the historical and mythological context surrounding this epic story, which is full of gods, demons, and ideas about cosmic duty, one can find more detailed information on the Mahabharata by looking at resources on Britannica.
